Military and tactical helmets at UK Tactical

Our helmet range covers certified operational ballistic helmets and tactical headgear built to the standards used by professional military and law enforcement. All helmets stocked at UK Tactical are genuine protective helmets constructed from high-tenacity ballistic Aramid fibre -- the same material family as Kevlar -- and certified to internationally recognised ballistic and fragmentation standards. These are not replicas or airsoft-grade shells. They are the same category of combat helmet worn by British Army and allied forces personnel in operational environments.

The primary helmet in our range is the Nexus SF M3, a FAST-cut ballistic helmet certified to NIJ standard 0101.06 Level IIIA and rated to STANAG 2920. It ships with an NVG shroud, side rail system, BOA dialler retention, and a seven-piece padded liner as standard, and is available in Black, Coyote, Olive Green, and Tan in sizes Small to XL. Alongside the helmets, we stock Warrior Assault Systems Nexus Helmet Covers and Nexus accessory components.

Ballistic protection - what the standards mean

When buying a ballistic or bulletproof helmet, the protection level is defined by independent testing standards, not manufacturer marketing. The two most relevant standards for the helmets in our range are STANAG 2920 and NIJ 0101.06.

STANAG 2920 is the NATO standard for ballistic fragmentation testing using a Fragment Simulated Projectile (FSP). A V50 rating of 620 m/s means the helmet shell stops a 1.1g, 22-calibre FSP at that velocity 50 percent of the time in controlled testing. This is the fragmentation standard used to qualify helmets for British Army and NATO military procurement.

NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA is an internationally recognised ballistic protection standard used across military and law enforcement procurement worldwide. A helmet certified to NIJ IIIA Level must stop a 9mm FMJ round at 436 m/s and a .357 Magnum JSP round at 448 m/s in independent laboratory testing. Level IIIA is the highest ballistic rating available for soft ballistic helmets and covers the handgun threat levels most relevant to military and law enforcement environments.

A Kevlar helmet refers to any combat helmet built from Kevlar or an equivalent Aramid fibre. Kevlar is the DuPont brand name for para-aramid synthetic fibre; Aramid is the generic term covering the same material class. All helmets in our range are Aramid-constructed. Kevlar helmet, Aramid helmet, and ballistic helmet all refer to the same class of protective headgear.

Helmet profiles: FAST, MICH, ACH and bump helmets explained

FAST-cut helmets

FAST stands for Future Assault Shell Technology. A FAST-cut helmet uses a high-cut shell design that removes material around the ears and lower rear to allow the wearer to mount communications headsets directly against the ear without interference from the shell. FAST-cut helmets are the current standard in professional military and special forces use because of their headset compatibility and reduced weight profile. The Nexus SF M3 is a FAST-cut design. If you intend to use a comms headset (Peltor, Sordin, or equivalent) as part of your kit, a FAST-cut tactical helmet is the appropriate choice.

 MICH and ACH helmets

MICH (Modular Integrated Communications Helmet) and ACH (Advanced Combat Helmet) designs use a lower cut around the ears than FAST helmets, providing more lateral and rear coverage at the cost of reduced headset clearance. These profiles were adopted by NATO and allied forces from the early 2000s as a replacement for the older PASGT design and remain in wide use across military and law enforcement. A mid-cut or MICH-cut army helmet gives broader side coverage but limits compatibility with over-ear communications systems.

Bump helmets

A bump helmet provides impact protection against falls and hard surfaces but does not carry ballistic certification. Bump helmets are used where the risk of ballistic threat is not present, including fast-rope training, climbing, and airsoft. They are significantly cheaper than ballistic helmets because the shell is not manufactured to NIJ or STANAG ballistic test standards. UK Tactical currently stocks certified ballistic helmets only. Frequently asked questions about military and tactical helmets

What is the difference between a ballistic helmet and a bump helmet?
A ballistic helmet is constructed from certified ballistic material (typically Aramid or Kevlar fibre) and tested to an internationally recognised standard such as NIJ IIIA or STANAG 2920. It provides protection against handgun rounds and fragmentation. A bump helmet is made from impact-resistant plastic or foam and protects against falls and impacts only - it carries no ballistic rating. All helmets sold by UK Tactical are certified ballistic helmets.

What does a Kevlar or ballistic helmet protect against?
Helmets certified to NIJ IIIA protect against 9mm FMJ and .357 Magnum JSP handgun threats and carry a fragmentation rating under STANAG 2920. They do not protect against rifle-calibre threats. Rifle threats require hard armour rated to Level III or Level IV, not soft ballistic helmets.

Are these helmets suitable for airsoft use?
Yes, though they are built and certified for operational military and law enforcement use. Airsofters purchasing from our range are buying genuine NIJ IIIA certified ballistic helmets, not replicas. They are available in Black, Coyote, Olive Green, and Tan with FAST-cut profiles, NVG shroud, side rail system, and BOA retention, and are compatible with standard airsoft and operational accessory fits.

What is a British Army helmet?
British Army standard combat helmet is the MK7, a mid-cut Kevlar helmet introduced in 2009. UK Tactical does not currently stock the MK7. Our range features the Nexus SF M3, a FAST-cut NIJ IIIA certified operational helmet used by professional personnel across multiple armed forces and special operations units.

Can I legally buy a bulletproof or ballistic helmet in the UK?
Yes. There is no restriction on the civilian purchase of ballistic helmets in the UK. Military helmets and ballistic helmets are legal to own and purchase without a licence, certificate, or permit.

What size do I need?
Measure your head circumference at its widest point, typically just above the ears. Sizes available:

  • Small: 51 to 55 cm (20.5 to 22 inch)
  • Medium: 54 to 59 cm (21.5 to 23 inch)
  • Large: 57 to 62 cm (22 to 24.5 inch)
  • XL: 60 to 64 cm (24 to 25.5 inch)

If you are between sizes, choose the larger size. The BOA dialler retention system allows fine adjustment within each size band.
